The purpose of highway maintenance services

The purpose of highway maintenance services is to make sure that the highway network is safe for the transportation of people and goods. Delivering safe, serviceable and sustainable roads while taking continuous improvement into consideration is the core objective of highway maintenance services.

One of the most important aspects of highway maintenance services is inspections. Inspections are necessary in order to detect defects in advance so that they can be fixed before they lead to dangerous obstructions on the road. Inspections also makes it possible for unlawful interference and obstructions on the road to be identified and removed thus ensuring the safety of road users. Frequent road inspections also make it possible for the need of routine or planned maintenance work to be identified.

There are four general types of inspection: scheduled, condition, specific, and random. The aim of scheduled inspections is to identify obstructions, interference, and defects on highways and to take care of them immediately in order to keep highways and their users safe. The aim of condition inspections is to assess the condition of highways in order to determine the need for structural maintenance. Specific inspection is carried out based on a specific need or demand while random inspection is carried out on an ad hoc basis to identify unlawful interference and obstructions on highways.

Some other highway maintenance services include: repairing potholes and maintaining trees, verges and hedges along the side of the road thus making the highway look more attractive. Some highway maintenance services can help people who need to carry out work on the public highway to obtain a license. Any hazard work or work that will cause an obstruction on the highway needs special permission.

High way maintenance is a specialized branch of civil engineering. In order to become a highway maintenance engineer, a degree in Engineering is a must.
