The Ambarrow Court Educational Project
In 2006 Bracknell Forest Borough Council was awarded a grant of £20,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to carry out an educational project to enthuse local communities about their history and archaeological potential. Year 6 pupils from New Scotland Hill, St Michaels and Uplands primary schools and Year 7 students from Sandhurst Secondary school each spent a day on the site of a now demolished Victorian country house at Ambarrow Court, in Sandhurst, discovering that archaeology doesn't have to be really old to be of importance. With the help of professional archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology the pupils learnt that there is a lot more than just digging to being an archaeologist. Working on two trenches the children unearthed the walls of Ambarrow Court, including the Victorian kitchen and morning room, learnt how to survey features using measurements from a baseline and washed the finds. They were visited by former employees from Ambarrow Court's Ministry of Defence days and used primary and secondary sources to bring together the site's rich and varied history.
